Mission Impact: Photogrammetry model photos collected

Team Ghost Diving USA headed back out to the UB-88 in preparation for our big project in December. Today’s goal was to complete the photogrammetry model of the sunken U-Boat.

Each of the teams was comprised of 2 divers, a photographer and a teammate acting as a safety diver. Michael and Tianyi were tasked with photographing the holes in the stern, the conning tower, and a sand perimeter. Jim and Curtis were tasked with the port side bow, the torpedo tubes, and a perimeter of sand. Symeon and Mark were tasked with the starboard side bow, the torpedo tubes, and a perimeter of sand.

Our team values safety over everything. Prior to getting in the water, our divers do a series of safety checks. Once they get into the water, they complete more safety checks. Team 3, upon getting into the water, discovered a minor equipment issue. They exited the water and investigated the issue out of an abundance of caution. Teams 1 and 2 were able to complete the dive and their assigned tasks with Team 2 noticing that Team 3 had not made the dive, they were also able to complete their assigned task. The teams completed their decompression obligations and returned to the boat.

Upon returning to the boat, the teams inquired about what happened with Team 3. The other teams were happy to find that Team 3 had identified an equipment issue, the divers were okay but opted to sit out the dive out of an abundance of caution.

Next steps for the UB-88 project include compiling all of the photos taken to create a digital model and then potentially 3D printing a physical model. Ghost Diving USA is very excited about the project and encourages everyone to follow our socials to check on the progress of our photogrammetry model!
